SCENES FROM WHERE I LIVE

Crow on a wire in my back yard this morning.

Towers of the Don Cesar Hotel Beach Resort. It's 100 years old and haunted. You can google it and find out more.

More later!

KEEP CREATING AND BE PEACEFUL!

AND NOW........FINALLY.........

Sorry guys, that this took so long today but I had to make a rather lengthy side trip to the dentist this morning before I could get involved in all that counting and cutting, etc. But, here are the results:
The WINNER IS: ta daaaaaaaaaaaaaa Move over Howie.........The WINNER is............

Oh, did you want to know how many entries there were? All together there were 167 entries. Ang had the most with 54, followed by Kai with 22 ...NO Kai, Jaja-binks-starwars-spoonbill didnt count! Tinker with 21, JoyceAnn with 16, Janet 12, Gemma 10, Turquoise Cro 10...and then so on down the line. But as they say, it only takes one. So.....the winner is....

...oh you want to know how I picked it? OK. The box here contained all the little papers with names, got a good shake, DH took off his glasses so he couldn't see, and picked one.

AND THE WINNER IS .......................... DRUM ROLL PLEASE................

JANET!!!!!!! (Link to her Just Bee Cause is on my sidebar). Congrats Janet!!! I'll make sure your prize wings its way to you soon....maybe on the wings of a ROSEATE SPOONBILL....uh, oh, you say the contest is over? Well, drat. Always a day late, that's me!

THANK YOU everyone, for playing and leaving such wonderful comments and stories. I loved every second of it. Even when I had to go back and read each comment again to do the count. Whew....I need a nap now! Thanks everyone!

WINNER.........OR NO WINNER!!!

I'LL LET YOU KNOW..............................

AS SOON AS I COUNT THE NAMES! heeeeheeeee

LAST CHANCE

Today is the last day you can enter the bird name for those juicy Sakura Gelly Roll pens! (See Monday's post if you missed the details). Anyway, tomorrow I can see I have a LOT of bird name counting to do....all you funny bunnies have left these amazing stories for me to sort out...you're all so humorous and clever and I love it!

I've posted a line drawing I did last night just to show some of the things you can do with these fabulous Gelly Roll pens...oh sigh...as if you didn't already know! It was freehand and simply fun, so don't look for perfection. I really like these Gelly Roll color pens, altho I have to say as an artist, and not a scrapper, the Micron black remains my favorite and most used. But the color showy pens are great for ATC's. And I don't even own any of the GOLD SHADOW pens in the giveaway. Couldn't find them...must be all sold out! The one's used here were the Micron black .03, then a little color added with the hot metallics and glitter pens --they are SO free flowing and juicy -- and as a last resort I used a clear glitter pen...surprised me with first time use because it showed up so well and had such lucious glitter! I WISH all this sparkling eye candy could show up on the computer scan, but alas, it does not!

I'm off to work now so I'll be back tomorrow, counting, and counting, and counting.........XOXOXOXOXO

ICE CUBES AND ART THOUGHTS.....

Where do we get our ideas, our inspiration? Sometimes I have an art project to do, but my mind doesn't want to just jump to an idea. It wants to think about it, mull over, take in this idea, trash that one. Sometimes I think "I've got it!"...only to wait a few minutes and that idea seems useless. I often put my materials on my work table, since I do usually have a vague idea if it will be paper or fabric or beads or whatever, and just leave them there, maybe even for a few days. I walk by and see them, and nothing comes to mind. I explore other artists work. I devour magazines and art books and websites. I read some spiritual words. I walk by and glance at the supplies and think "hmmmmm, maybe this, or maybe that". then one of those walk-by times it happens. Viola! ....the idea pops into my head and sticks! Then suddenly I am overwhelmed with ideas on that same subject. Too many to use. But at least the idea is finally there, the shape and colors come together in my mind, and at last I am excited and can sit down and the rush to create begins. But then, I have to force myself to slow down because I am wanting it to be finished! Over! Done! I have a burning need to SEE the end result! I have had it in my spirit too long and I need to get it out, and go on to the next project.

How do your ideas happen?

These delicious, melting ice cubes were painted by my very talented daughter, Alecia.

The word for the day, once again, is PINK BIRD. Check Monday's post for contest information. Good luck!

HAVE A PEACEFUL SUNDAY.

PAST TREASURES

Somewhere just around Valentine's Day I received a special surprise in the snail mail, which I have not yet had a chance to post. Posting my treasures is important, because it gives me bragging rights! So I am hereby bragging on the sweeeeeeeeeet Friendship/Valentine card and sweeeeeeeeeet ATC I received from the darling Mz. Kai!

The front-tied with pink ribbon and opens like a shuttered window.

The center-done with lovely pinky colors and flowers and an opened delicate paper umbrella - This is beautiful and the colors are so juicy and pretty. DH was standing behind me when I scanned it, and he said "that's beautiful, whatever it is." LOL He knoweth not about ATC's, but he does spot pretty colors!

The back - it talks about Friendship. So important!

.......and the card. It's lovely, makes you want to be sitting there in those chairs and drooling over a piece of that lovely cake. Of course, I wouldn't eat a bite....nope...not me! Heh Heh

THANK YOU KAI!!!!!

THE WORDS FOR THE DAY: THINK PINK! AS IN PINK BIRD! AS IN PINK BIRD CONTEST POSTED LAST MONDAY. PINK BIRD AS IN....UM....OH OH....I ALMOST SAID IT. AS IN GENUS AJAIA AJAJA!

Paris Parfait has a really good post today...everyone should read it. Her link is on my sidebar.

It's a BEAUTIFUL day in the Sunshine State! Lovely weather, melodious mockingbirds singing their songs, Spring is near, I can feel it! PEACE AND LOVE TO ALL!

HERE'S HOW.....

A couple of people have asked how the last posted project was made so here's how. I learned it from a very talented, award winning artist who is a winter visitor at the art center where I work. Mine does not even compare with her beautiful work, but...well...heck, it's a start! ;)

MATERIALS: 1. Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil (Heavy Duty is a MUST!)

2. Support such as foam core or cardboard

3. Ammonia (I used Windex w/ammonia)

4. Fluid Acrylic Paints

Cover the support with aluminum foil, shiny side up. Don't worry if you get some crinkles in the foil ...Using a dull pencil, emboss your design onto the foil. The more design you do, the better the end result becuz there will be lots of little crevasses for the paint to fall into. I didn't do enough on mine! .When your design is finished, use a soft tissue or rag to wipe the sheet with ammonia to remove all the oil left by your fingers. After that, keep your fingers off the design. Let it dry.....Paint over the embossed foil using WATERED-DOWN fluid acrylics. Use whatever color you want just make sure it is NOT OPAQUE. After the original layer is dry you can use opaque colors, just keep it thin...cover everything.....Let it dry.......From here on you can paint over the dried acrylic base by using more acrylic or watercolors til you get the effect you want. (Hmmm, wonder what Twinkling H20's would look like). After it dries, you can use a toothpick to gently pick out any place you want the silver foil to show. (I didn't pick anywhere on mine).

There is another slightly different technique also. You can make your main design out of lines of glue (that stays firm) on your support, then put the foil over that when it's dry, press gently to bring the design forward, and then use your pencil to make additional design all over the project.

I hope this is clear because while I am trying to think of this, and post it in the correct order, Bird is screaming for her breakfast, Dog is whining for her breakfast, Keets are screeching for theirs, and DH is trying to read me things from the morning paper....like I can't read for myself. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! This place is a ZOO!!!

back of project taped onto support

Make your design with a dull pencil

Add color this is raw sienna

Finished project. The paints I used were all acrylic. Raw Sienna, a green and a metallic gold, some red, and yellow. Have fun. If you try it, hope you'll post cuz I'd love to see variations.

DON'T FORGET THERE IS STILL TIME TO NAME THE BIRDIE. SEE MONDAY'S POST FOR DETAILS. WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED TUESDAY, FEB 27.

THE OTHER HALF OF TODAY'S POST

A foil project I did yesterday. First attempt. I'll tell more about it if anyone wants to know. My kiln projects are not done; they were underfired and have to go thru the heat again!

REMEMBER THE BIRD CONTEST.....WANT THOSE JUICY PENS??? MENTION HIS NAME! The more you say it, the more chances to win!
See last Monday's post for details.

HALF A POST

Thanks for your wonderful complimentary comments. Loving it! Embracing it. Taking encouragement from it. But....don't forget to mention the birdie's name. That's how you get more entries into the contest. Name it, name it, name it! I'll be back later today after my glass class to show you the eye candy I made last time.....that is IF the kiln didn't eat it up!

GO TONY BLAIR....you're on the right track now! And PM ANDERS FOGH RASMUSSEN of Denmark. Pull out. Maybe DUB-YA will get the message! Later dudes....... :)

PEN WORK

Pen and Ink drawing using Micron pens, different sized, mostly .05. The tiny bit of red in the lipstick and on the lips is also Micron - brush tip. I LOVE to do line work. Title is "Backstage". Size approximately 11"x14", or 16X20 framed, on Bristol. It's a little shortchanged here becuz it wouldn't fit on the scanner.

You guys are cracking me up with this contest thing! Bunch of funny bunnies you are! But......I'm still counting bird names.......Hmmmmm, are you SURE that's what kind of bird it is? HeeeHeeeHeeee

If anyone has missed the contest details, see yesterday's post. Welp, back to creating! Seeyalater

AJAIA AJAJA

HERE'S THE CONTEST! NAME THE BIRD! All you have to do is leave in the comment section the TWO WORD common name for this beautiful giant. Here's a hint: He has a 53" wingspan, red eyes, grey bill, white neck and back, and a beautiful pink color on his back and wings. He also has red legs. WooWoo! Red legs! He is a resident and breeder of the Caribbean, South America, and the Gulf Coast USA. A gorgeous creature. Leave the TWO WORD name as often as you like. The more times you say it, the more chances you have to win! And.....there's a hint in the title. Bird will be here through next Monday February 26, and I will announce the winner on Tuesday, February 27.

And Here's the PRIZE. The Sakura Company has authorized me to offer this five-pak of GOLD SHADOW pens to the winner. It writes gold in the middle, and a color on the outside! The pen that gives the WOW effect! If you'd like to know more about this product, check on the Sakura Art Tips link on my sidebar, and scroll to GOLD SHADOW. There is one (sad) catch. The manufacturer has asked that I have this contest open to only residents of the US and Canada because of mailing problems. So because of that, I am going to offer ANOTHER SPECIAL PRIZE if a name is posted from another country. Something of my own creation, and I don't know what yet. Whoever draws the winning name (prolly DH - I'm not letting Mz. Wee play anymore) will keep drawing until he gets One US or Canada winner for the pens, and if there is another country involved in the comments, one winner from outside the US and Canada. I promise not to leave you out! So GOOD LUCK everyone! Now, I'm off to...sigh...work!
Note: The above special bird was drawn with Micron .03 pen and a splash of wc.

PASTEL MERMAIDS

A pastel, approx. 20X24, as yet untitled, of three mermaids that have found a treasure chest. I think the skin color is a bit dark, much too dark for bottom dwellers who never see the sunlight. Or do they? Perhaps they know of a secret Carribbean beach. I realize now that I should not have done this on brown paper. I could use a good critique. Go ahead, lay it on! I can take it. It will help me improve! It needs a title too!

Details of same.

DON'T FORGET THE CONTEST TOMORROW. It will have a little different twist......or maybe I'm twisted.....oh no, just kidding!

IT'S ME AGAIN!

I'm back after a much needed blogging rest. I have missed visiting everyone's blog and reading up on all the good stuff, so today I have a lot of catching up to do! But first, some eye candy. Everybody likes eye candy! :)

A sure sign of Spring being just around the corner. A flock of robins (two here at the mailbox but the yard was full) stopping to get breakfast so they can fatten themselves up for the long migration back north soon.
A wonderful little doll I received from my special friend Linda who lives here. She brought it to me at work Thursday. She makes these and sells them. The hair looks like Violette's poofs. It's called Sitting Pretty, and I LOVE it! This lady is soooooo talented!

A lovely dozen roses I received from DH for Valentines Day, plus a slice of chocolate-covered key lime pie with a Valentine decoration on it. I can't post it cuz it's in my tummy!

The cup is a surprise I received in the mail from the very talented LisaOceandreamer. I was totally freaked when I opened the box; I had no idea it was coming. Guerilla Art...yes!!!!! This most lovely art is my new morning coffee cup. It's BEAUTIFUL! And it fits me perfectly becuz you KNOW I am a birdie person. Thank you Mz. Lisa!

The other pic is some diachroic pendants I made in my glass fusing/slumping class. This was my first try. More to come later. It's great fun and such a surprise to see what comes out of the kiln. It's never what you put in!

I also received a Valentine card and a Friendship Day ATC from the sweetheart Mz. Kai. I have not scanned this yet so I can't show it here, but take my word they are sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet and so very appreciated!!

I seem to be having major slow-down get-stuck sit-and-wait computer problems, so don't be surprised if I disappear again, this time not on purpose!

Watch for a MONDAY MORNING SURPRISE CONTEST!

Gosh, I missed all you guys!

TAKING A BLOGGING BREAK!

Resting up, catching up. Back soon!

AND THE WINNER (S) IS....ARE.....GULP!

I'm so sorry it has taken me half a day to get here with the winning name (s) but this morning I went to St. Pete Beach Art Center and took a class on glass fusing, or slumping. I made three dichroic glass pendants, and I can't wait til next week when I can see them after they are fired! This is my first glass project. It was lots of fun.

So, I came home and took all the names off the blog, and typed them into word, and cut them all out and folded and put in a dish and presented it to Mz. Wee, hoping she would cooperate and pick the winner for me. I thought I would get a really cute picture of all this. But....would she cooperate? NO! She was extremely angry at me because I put her outside and took up her chain so she could not climb down (the white chain to the side of the pic). She had a temper tantrum and screamed all thru my lunch (sorry, but I was starving so I hadda eat first!) and I shut the door to drown her out, but you know, 'caws are LOUD! And she is SPOILED! Anyhow, if you look at the pic, you can see I offered her the dish full of paper names. Ordinarily she would pick out a paper and try to chew it. Today, she reached down too fast for my camera skills, and scooped out....not one...but two names, and flicked them onto the floor. Look at her evil eye as she is thinking about doing exactly that! Such a scheming little.....uh...witch!

Anyhow, since she flicked out two, I decided there needs to be a runner up. The first one I picked up and unfolded was........TA DA...........drum roll please.............NINNIE! And the second one was PAMALALALA. So both pieces will go out soon and Ninnie, you get first choice, so let me know which one you want!

THANK YOU everyone who played this game with me. It was great fun, and I sincerely appreciate all your encouraging comments.

TODAY IS THE DAY!

Today is the last day to be eligible to win one of these two pastels, originally posted on Saturday, Feb. 3. I will put all names of those who left a comment bwtween then and tonight at 10 p.m. EST in the "hat" and draw the winning name. Winner gets to choose which pastel they want, and I will mat it.....(if you want it matted, of course). So...if you want one...just leave a comment. I'll take your name once from each day you posted. The winner will be announced tomorrow morning, Wednesday!

FYI the size of these pastel drawings are: Orchid - approximately 6" x 10" and Still Life with Fruit approx. 12" x 12".

Happy Creating Today! Me? I'm going to be working on that CROW book! I'm about crowed out. I'm starting to grow black shiny feathers. Yesterday the phone rang and I answered it..."caw, caw?". Hmmm, I wonder if I can fly....

SOMETHING WITH MORE COLOR

Since it seems I have been touching on the subject of storms in one way or another lately, I thought maybe it would be interesting to post a picture of one. This painting is called simply APPROACHING STORM, and it's an oil on paper canvas. It isn't new. I did it some time ago.

On another subject, a kind blogger has informed me that my feeds are not working properly. She clicked on a link at someone's site and came up with a January 3 post here. So I'd appreciate it if you have a link to this blog, click on it and let me know if something other than the current post comes up. I want to be fully armed when I contact Blogger!!! I mean, I want to at least SOUND like I know what I'm talking about, even if I don't! This non-tekkie brain doesn't get it all. Actually, doesn't get it MUCH! But...never say die!!!

DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE YOUR NAME IF YOU WANT YOUR NAME IN THE POT TO WIN ONE OF THE PASTELS. CHECK PREVIOUS POST WITH THE VALENTINE PICTURE IF YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT IT YET.

I hadda work today, and my old bones are really tired, so I'll be back tomorrow. Have a WONDERFUL and hopefully CREATIVE evening!

MAGNIFICANT REDHEAD

Height: 5 feet
Weight: 16 lbs.
Wingspan: 7.5 feet
Nickname: Whooper

Perhaps some of you may recall my excitement at my December 20 post when the 18 Whooping Cranes arrived safely after following the Ultra Light 2500 miles or so. Learning to migrate.

So you will know how devastating it is to learn that the ferocious storm that tore across East/Central Florida a couple of days ago, spawning that terrible Tornado that destroyed so many lives, took them. Every one of them. All 18. Dead. Conservationists try so hard to re-establish the Florida flock, but Mother Nature rules. She gives, and she takes away.

UPDATE: February. It's been discovered that one survived! The smallest of the flock, number 615, who was not even able to fly the entire distance behind the ultralight and had to be trucked in from when she went down somewhere in Georgia, has survived. Sometimes Mother Nature makes miracles!

This ATC is my small tribute to these beautiful birds. The sky is the actual sky here this morning, about 7 a.m.

Don't forget to sign up to win one of the pastels. Go to yesterday's post for more information if you missed it.

and.....GO COLTS! Tony Dungy deserves the win!

VALENTINE SURPRISE HERE TOO!!!

OK, I WANT TO DO A VALENTINE CONTEST TOO! OH, NO, YOU GUYS ARE NOT LEAVING ME OUT!!! SO...HERE'S THE DEAL. IF YOU COMMENT ON THIS POST, OR ANY FUTURE POST BETWEEN TODAY AND FEBRUARY 6, WHICH IS NEXT TUESDAY, I'LL PUT YOUR "NAME IN THE HAT" TO RECEIVE ONE OF THE PASTEL DRAWINGS I POSTED ON FRIDAY, FEB. 2....ORCHID, OR WEDNESDAY JAN. 31....STILL LIFE W/FRUIT. AND I'LL MAT IT. YOUR CHOICE WHICH ONE YOU WANT. SO SCROLL BACK TO SEE IF YOU WANT ONE OF THESE, AND IF SO ...SAY SO!

I'LL SEE IF MZ. WEE WILL COOPERATE AND DO THE DRAWING. SHE LIKES PAPERS!

Oh, yeah. your name only once PER DAY will go into the "hat", so if you post once every day, you will have more chances. So that's four days, Feb. 3,4,5 and 6, four chances, hmmmm, what percentage is that? ;) XOXOXOXOXO

TORNADO

Thank you all for your comments and emails. I was fortunate to be spared this tornado. We had a terrific storm with horrible lightening, but the tornado itself hit Lake and Volusia Counties, in central and east Florida which is about 2 - 3 hours away. I'm on the West coast. I am still trying to reach my family that lives in Orlando and surrounding areas, but I am sure they are ok. It's so nice to have caring friends. xoxoxoxoxo

ON A PASTEL KICK?

I'm not much good at flowers. I think the Orchid paints itself. It's so beautiful. I'm over the pastel kick for a little while. On to other things.
Hmmmmmm, what's next?
Thanks everyone for your encouraging comments. Without all of you, what would be the point of blogging?
